When it comes to breakfast, I’m pretty good about sticking to the “wholesome” stuff. You know, eggs, toast with protein, oatmeal, etc. Once a while, however, I do get an early morning craving for something sugary. But this doesn’t mean it’s time to reach for a donut or a muffin. After all, the key to starting your day off right is a breakfast that is packed with nutrients (protein, fiber) and not processed sugars.
So, where do I turn when my sunrise sweet tooth kicks in? Towards the blender, of course. With an über-sweet taste and optimal nutritional value, a fruit smoothie is the perfect way to satisfy even the strongest of sugar yearnings.
One of the great things about smoothies is variety: the combinations you can dream up is pretty much limitless, not to mention guaranteed to be delicious. That said, I myself am partial to one concoction, in particular. Think: blueberries, blueberries, and more blueberries, with some other fun stuff thrown in, as well. Get the full low-down below:
Blueberry Protein Smoothie
1 scoop plant-based protein powder (I use Vega in the vanilla flavor)
1 cup milk of choice (I prefer almond, but it’s entirely up to you)
1/2 cup-1 cup frozen blueberries
1 tablespoon smooth nut butter (I use Barney’s almond butter)
If you want to lay all your ingredients out like I did and snap a pic, start by doing that. If not, simply combine all the above ingredients in a blender and let it whirl. Who long you let it blend is up to you; I prefer my smoothies smooth but thick, so I usually let mine run for 15-20 seconds. You can always stop the blender, do a taste test, and turn it back on until the consistency is what you want. After you’re satisfied, pour it into a glass or bowl (yes, I have done this. Yes, it does look weird. Yes, it’s worth it.) and enjoy!
