Happy June! Is it lame that the that this month’s “On My Radar” post falls on the actual first on the month makes me really, really happy? Just a little? Yeah, probably.
June is always a really exciting time for me. Not only does it signal the end of the school year, but it’s also the official start of summer and my birthday month. That said, there are a few more things going on in the next four week that make things even better. Check them out below…
CFDA Awards. If last month’s Met Gala was the fashion industry’s answer the Oscars sans-trophies, tonight’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards ceremony is here to fill that gap. Each year, in partnership with Swarovski, the CFDA hands out awards to some of the country’ top talents. Past winners include the likes of Tom Ford and Tabitha Simmons (for the Lifetime Achievement Award and Swarovski Award for Accessories Design, respectively). This year’s nominees? Well let’s just say it’s going to be stiff competition, what with Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne or Public School, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright of Rag &Bone, and Thom Brown all up for the Menswear Designer of the Year alone. Oh, and I can’t resist mentioning that an A Style Study favorite, Eva Zuckerman of Eva Fehren (check out profile on her here), is up for honors in the accessories category. Fingers crossed…!
“Global Fashion Capitals” at the Museum at FIT. I’m a big fan of the Museum at FIT, so it’s no surprise that I can’t wait to see their latest exhibit, called “Global Fashion Capitals”. Dedicated to revealing the history of the world’s established fashion centers – Paris, New York, London, Milan – the show will features designs from everyone from Christopher Kane and Bouchra Jarrar to revered greats like Charles Frederick Worth and Gabrielle Chanel. There will also be a focus on six cities that are fast joining the ranks of major industry hubs, so you can expect to see designs from Mumbai, Antwerp, and Sao Paulo, among others.
The (Big?) 1-6. As I mentioned before, June happens to be my birthday month. I’m turning sixteen this year, which is supposedly, like, a really big deal. I’m not one for the whole “sweet sixteen” thing, so I’ll definitely be keeping everything low-key. I’m thinking maybe some fish tacos and an absorb about of chocolate ice cream…with Reese’e peanut butter cups, of course.
Un Pour les Garçons. Although it may feel as if we just kissed Fashion Month goodbye, it’s already time for the menswear shows. Kicking things off is Paris on June 24, with the runways closing on the 28th. You can expect all eyes to be on the City of Lights, where menswear innovators like Hedi Slimane and Rick Owens are set to debut their spring/summer 2016 offerings.
Favorites Reunited. Most people remember Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman for their roles as Rose Dawson and Professor Snape, respectively. To me, however, they will always be the incomparable Marianne Dashwood and Colonel Brandon, whom they portrayed in 1995’s Sense and Sensibility. So imagine my excitement when I heard that they would finally be reuniting on the big screen in A Little Chaos. Set for stateside release on June 26, A Little Chaos takes place in the court of King Louis XIV (Rickman), and tells a quirky tale centering around gardener Sabine de Barra, played by Winslet. Although the storyline leaves me a little skeptical, I just can’t wait to see Marianne and Brandon together again.
So, that’ s my month in a nutshell. What’s on your calendar for June?
