Lately, I’ve been having some form of toast for breakfast any chance I get. Most mornings, I stick by my go-to: toasted Ezekiel bread topped with almond butter and sliced bananas. But, sometimes I’m craving something with a tad more pizzaz (can you use that word to describe food? I think yes) to start my day off on a high-energy note. For those instances, I’ve come to rely heavily on the surprisingly delicious confection seen above. I’ve come to think of it as my “Morning Smash”, because literally everything on it, from the egg to the avocado, is, for lack of a better word, smashed. Clever, right? (This is the part where you say “Yes, Olivia, so clever”).
Creative names aside, here’s how you can concoct your own Morning Smash. Because, let’s face it, you really, really want to.
A Style Study Morning Smash Toast
1 slice bread, toasted to your liking
1 egg, hard or soft-boiled (I prefer somewhere in the middle)
1/2 an avocado, insides scooped out
pinch of chia seeds
hearty sprinkle of cracked pepper
Start by placing the egg in a pot of water and letting it sit over medium heat. Once the water start to boil, place your bread in the toaster and get to work scooping out your avocado. This can be very easy or the hardest thing you’ll do all day – it all depends on the ripeness of your avocado. Once you’re satisfied with how long your egg has been boiling, take it out, slice it and scoop the insides into a small bowl, mashing it up into bite-sized pieces. By this time your toast should be ready, remove it from the toaster and spread the avocado on top of it. Again, this could take five seconds, or you could be taking the word “smash” very literally. Either way, get it all spread out like you would with butter or jam, and then proceed to sprinkle the egg on top of it. For some added sustenance, sprinkle chia seeds on top, and finish off with some cracked pepper for added flavor. After that, you’re free to dig in and relish in this savory start to your day…
